I believe it’s rare that a couple gets married knowing everything about each other beforehand. There are always quirks and habits that appear with time, surprising the other member of the marriage. Case in point: my husband and I had not ever grilled hamburgers together before we married. We were two college students living in apartments, busy with school. We didn’t have the time or the means to grill meat together. Immediately after we got married, we spent a summer in the Seattle area while my husband interned with Microsoft. To save money, we lived in my husband’s parents’ basement during those three months and got to eat a lot of grilled meals with his family. Imagine my surprise as we walked along the kitchen counter assembling our burgers when my husband reached for the potato chips and put them, not on the side of his plate, but on top of his burger on the bun! He topped it off with a dollop of cottage cheese. I came to a complete halt and just stared at him. “Don’t you like ketchup and mustard on your burger?” I asked. “Nope, just potato chips and cottage cheese,” was the answer. I was surprised. I was also a little worried. We had not lived on our own together yet and I was wondering if he was going to pull out a bunch of weird eating habits as I attempted to show off my few homemaking skills. In the end, it was me that had the weird eating habits. He didn’t stray far from Velveeta and spaghetti sauce mix. The potato chips and cottage cheese were his only deviations from what I would have considered good old American eating.
I found it amusing that in this month’s Pass the Cookbook recipes, there was one for Bobby Flay’s Signature Burger: the Crunch Burger. It gets its crunch from potato chips. Who knew that my Velveeta loving husband was so ahead of his culinary time when it came to grilled hamburgers?!
note: all of theses photos show my burger, which was served on gluten free bread.
Crunchburger: who knew my husband and Bobby Flay had so much in common?
Author: Bobby Flay and the Good Guy
- 2 pounds ground beef (80% lean)
- salt and pepper
- sliced Cheddar cheese
- fresh tomato
- lettuce
- hamburger buns
- ruffled potato chips (ruffles are a must)
- ketchup
- mustard
- pickles
- mayonnaise
- Form patties out of the hamburger.
- Heat grill to medium high.
- Cook burgers, five minutes on each side, being careful not to set any grease fires.
- When done, place on waiting buns and immediately top with cheese, potato chips, and whatever condiments you desire.
The original recipe called for a horseradish mayo: ¼ cup mayo, 2 Tbsp Dijon, 2 Tbs drained horseradish with salt and pepper to taste. I took mayo and added a gluten free Thai dipping sauce. Go crazy and make whatever mayo you desire.
